-WORLD WAR II BATTLES-
THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC
Canada's Role in the Battle
Canadians played a big role in the battle of the Atlantic. With the allied forces battling the Germans for the control of the Atlantic, it was necessary for Canada to help the allied and protect men who are in transportation ships to help in the war overseas.
With this crucial part of the war, Canada joins the allied. With the war closing in on Canada the help of canadas merchant navy, royal Canadian navy, and royal Canadian air force were needed. Allied Convoys frequently left busy ports such as Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland, during the war.
German U-boats took a big toll on allied merchant ships and decreased the amount of supplies being sent from north America and Europe it was hard for the allied to replenish ships and still be able to get past the Germans.
Germany and the Allied also had battles for better technology. Germany made torpedoes that were attracted to noise that where made from ship propeller’s, eventually the allied made a solution to stop the torpedoes by making a louder sound underwater and was towed to the back of the supply ship, diverting the torpedoes. New radar and sonar technology was made that also helped the allied find U-boats and made new weapons such as the “hedgehog” bomb that helped sink U-boats. With the improved tactics and technology of the Allied it given them the upper hand and turned the battle around.
The Allied victory in world war 2 would not have been possible without victory in the sea it required overcoming great odds but with the support of the royal Canadian air force and royal Canadian navy the support and supply ships going to Europe would not have been possible thanks to the one millions brave men and women who made the war more peaceful. This battle was from September 3, 1939- May 7, 1945
