Consequences of the Battle of the Atlantic
• Around 2000 of the RCN perished
• 752 of RCAF perished due to accidents, environment, and the enemy
• Victory in the end against the enemy due to help from Canadian forces
• Victoria Cross awarded to a member of RCAF for outstanding leadership
• Halifax memorial was created in Point Pleasant Park as a reminder of Canadians who perished in the Battle of the Atlantic.
• 25 000 merchant ships successfully crossed the Atlantic from North America to Britain
• Towards end of war RCN contained 373 fighting ships and more than 110 000 members
• RCN included 6500 women • Incredible numbers of ships came from Canada’s shipyards
• Book of Remembrance contains almost 1600 Canadians and Newfoundlanders and people who served on Canadian and Newfoundland ships
